TeraNets: Ultra-broadband Communication Networks in the Terahertz Band

Overview

Terahertz Band (0.1-10 THz) communication is envisioned as a key technology to satisfy the increasing demand for higher speed wireless links. Terahertz Band communication will alleviate the spectrum scarcity problem and overcome the capacity limitations of current wireless systems, and enable new applications both in classical networking domains as well as in novel nanoscale communication paradigms. While the frequency regions immediately below and above this band (the microwaves and the far infrared, respectively) have been extensively investigated, this is still one of the least-explored frequency ranges for communication.

The fundamental research objective of this project is to establish the theoretical foundations of ultra-broadband communication networks in the Terahertz Band. This project will have contributions along five major thrusts. First, novel solid-state graphene-based transceivers for Terahertz Band communication will be investigated. Second, graphene-based ultra-broadband antennas and antenna arrays will be develoepd. Third, channel propagation models for the entire Terahertz Band will be developed. Fourth, novel solutions for the physical layer will be explored, which include novel bandwidth-adaptive modulations as well as pioneering massive MIMO techniques for Terahertz Band communications. Fifth, emerging link layer functionalities for Terahertz Band communication networks will be developed.
